Side effects of prednisolone tablets and liquid

We know that it is common to struggle with your mental health when you have cancer or care for someone with cancer. You should also avoid close contact with children who have had the flu vaccine nasal spray if your immune system is severely weakened. In the UK, live vaccines include rubella, mumps, measles, BCG, yellow fever and the shingles vaccine (Zostavax).

  • You might feel dizzy and you may feel as though the room is spinning.
  • This means you should avoid any live vaccine until at least 3 months after your course of corticosteroids has finished.
  • You might have a burning or tingling sensation around your bottom during a steroid injection into a vein (intravenous).
  • No specific antidote is available; treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
  • If a diagnosis of chickenpox is confirmed, the illness warrants specialist care and urgent treatment.

Chickenpox is often more severe in children who are having steroid treatment due to their reduced immune response. Most treatment centres will test newly diagnosed patients to see if they are immune to chickenpox. You can ask your child’s health team for the results or, if it hasn’t been done, if it needs to be. If you have high-dose steroids, or steroids and other cancer treatments at the same time, you may have an increased risk of infection.

Tell your doctor or nurse if you have headaches, nosebleeds, blurred or double vision or shortness of breath. These are manufactured versions of the hormones produced by the adrenal glands . They are a treatment for many different conditions and diseases.

  • This leaflet is about the use of prednisolone for nephrotic syndrome.
  • If you have steroids as part of treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma, you might be given them intravenously, at the same time as your chemotherapy.
  • Corticosteroids may be taken orally in tablet form, via inhalers, via injections or within lotions, gels and creams.
  • Regular exercise, especially things that involve your bones carrying the weight of your body, such as walking, can also help to reduce the risk of getting osteoporosis.
  • If your metabolism slows down, you might gain weight, even if your appetite doesn’t increase.

The need for appropriate dosage adjustment should be considered when these drugs are administered concomitantly. Rifamycins accelerate metabolism of corticosteroids and thus may reduce their effect. Erythromycin inhibits metabolism of methylprednisolone and possibly other corticosteroids.

How do I take steroids?

However, they’re not usually recommended unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Corticosteroids are mainly used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Taking prednisolone at higher doses for a long time can slow down the normal growth of children and teenagers.

You should have this card if you are dependant on daily steroid use. This means your body has problems making enough of a hormone called cortisol. Having this problem can affect your body’s ability to cope with stress.

Live vaccines

It is important to note that different people will have very different responses to steroids. The key to successful steroid management is to be aware of the potential side effects and work to prevent, or reduce, them where possible. Reduction in steroid dose may be necessary if side effects are unmanageable or intolerable (Figure 4). If this is unsuccessful, changing to another type of steroid or dosing regimen is necessary before abandoning treatment altogether.

Your cancer type

If you need to take both medications, you may be given a medication called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). The HIV medication may increase the level of corticosteroid in your body. It’s sometimes necessary for steroid tablets to be taken for longer periods.

Common conditions

Steroids used to treat disease are man-made corticosteroids and are different to anabolic steroids sometimes used in sports. Prednisolone is the most common steroid tablet, but dexamethasone is also used orally. Oral steroids are used to treat many autoimmune conditions including allergies, asthma and neurological disorders such as CIDP, myasthenia gravis & NMO.
